👇 Question of the Day: What’s your favorite dipping sauce for onion rings—ranch, fry sauce, ketchup, or something else?

1 large Vidalia onion (or equivalent sweet onion variety) sliced and separated

1 ½ cups panko breadcrumbs

1 cup buttermilk

1 egg – beaten

1 cup All-Purpose flour

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1/4 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

fresh ground pepper

olive oil cooking spray (optional)

Prepare the onion by removing the outer skin and slicing both ends (root and tip) of the onion. Once each end is removed, slice horizontally into ½-inch thick round sections. Separate each of the rings and remove any excess skins between the rings. Set aside.

Using two medium – large bowls create your dry and wet mixture.

To a medium bowl, combine flour, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Whisk to combine all dry ingredients. Add to the seasoned flour mixture, buttermilk and egg. Whisk well to combine all ingredients until no lumps are remaining and the flour has completely hydrated.

In the large bowl, add the breadcrumbs.

Using one hand for the wet and one hand for the dry, dredge the sliced onions in the buttermilk-flour mixture, allow the excess to drip off, and then (using dry hand) coat with the panko breadcrumbs.

Be careful to keep one hand in the wet and one hand in the dry without overlapping to prevent a sticky mess.

Place the breaded onion rings on a parchment lined baking sheet in an even layer and then transfer to the freezer for 15 minutes (this will help keep the breading intact.).

*If you want to make a batch in advance, freeze until firm and transfer to a freezer safe storage container. Store for up to three-months, cook from frozen, and add an additional 2-minutes to the cooking time.

Preheat your Air Fryer to 370℉. Spray the air fryer basket with cooking oil. Add the onions in the air fryer in a single layer without overlapping. Cook in batches, if necessary flipping halfway through the cooking and spraying the tops with cooking oil. Cook for 10-12 minutes at 370℉ (I cook the first batch for 12-minutes and each subsequent batch (because the air fryer is hot after the first batch) for only 10-11 minutes.

Serve with Ranch, Ketchup or your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy!
